Colonosaurus Marsh, 1872 (Amer. J. Sci., (3) 4, 406. NcZ) "stunted lizard"
ko-LON-o-SAWR-us (from Gr. kylos "stunted" + Gr. sauros "lizard")* (m) named proposed for a small toothed lower jaw found with the type specimen of Ichthyornis, and which Marsh first identified as belonging to a reptile; he later correctly attributed the dentary to Ichthyornis.
