Archaeopteryx lithographica, Solnhofen Specimen
Based on the largest specimen of Archaeopteryx known to date, the Solnhofen specimen
(it lacks a museum number, but is located in the BMM of Berlin) has been
granted the most recent unique genus/species name combination, Wellnhoferia grandis, though I do not follow this.
This largest specimen is distinguished primarily on
the basis of a fourth toe (of only one foot known) with only four
phalanges, when conventionally Archaeopteryx and most other dinosaurs and birds
have five. Elzanowski also considered the tail to be much shorter than
other specimens, but the incomplete nature of the specimen makes this
difficult to judge. The Solnhofen specimen is also the most robust
specimen known, and has a smaller pelvis for its size than other
specimens. Image Copyright © 2005 Jaime Headden. All Rights
