Aetonyx Broom, 1911 (Ann. S. Afr. Mus., 7, 304. NcZ) "eagle claw"
ay-EE-to-niks (Gr. aetos "eagle" + Gr. onyx "claw") (m) probably alluding to a large toe claw on the second digit with a "combing or scraping edge such as is seen in many birds" and which Broom thought might be used in grooming the animal's supposedly long scales. [= Massospondylus]
